People who abuse drugs using needles are at very high risk of contracting HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, AIDS and hepatitis. Drug abusers who are at the highest risk of contracting these diseases are those who abuse heroin, cocaine, steroids and methamphetamines (“Medical Consequences of Drug Abuse”). Drug addicts often don't care where the needles they use come from as long as they get their dose of the drug. Most drug addicts are unaware of the danger they face when under the influence of drugs; they don't think that they might accidentally use a dirty needle or get behind the wheel of a car because they think they can drive.
