Topic > The Different Student - 964

This story passage is titled "Where the Ashes Are". The reading began with the student answering some conceptual questions related to the content of the topic. Unlike the first passage which was fact-based, this passage has many descriptive words and sparks more excitement. The reader must use expressive language while reading the passage. When the student was asked what he knew about Vietnam, the answer was that there was a war in the country, but the name of the war was not known. Next, the student was asked what civilized means and the answer was a person who lives in that civilization. For this the student got zero and the next question was asked, the question that followed the student answered what does escalation mean. Dillun's response was that escalation meant further escalation. One was given because the response was not explicit, as the explicit response would have been to step up. The fourth question, what does convoy mean, was not answered because the reader said he did not know what convoy meant. The last question in this section was a ceasefire and it was said that a ceasefire would stop the shooting. Full marks were awarded for this response, and a total of five points, or 33%, were accumulated in the concept question section. This indicates that the student does not have in-depth knowledge of the topic in question. Next, the student proceeded to orally read the passage in which thirty-five errors occurred. From this total, twenty of these errors were substitutions, one was insertion, and five were changes in meaning. As a result of the errors, Dillun's overall accuracy level of this step was at the independent level, 95%. The total… half of the paper… provides the reader with tools to examine and show relationships in the text and help the student write a well-organized summary of the text. Some of the graphic organizers that can be considered are Venn diagrams, storyboarding, story map, and cause/effect. Answering questions is another strategy that can be implemented and can be effective because reading becomes purposeful by focusing on what needs to be learned. This strategy reinforces active thinking while reading. The question-answer relationship strategy is useful as it helps the student answer questions better. There are four different types of questions; Right there, think and search, author and you and alone. There are many strategies that can be used to assist this student. Without a strategy this student will continue to fail in reading and comprehension because the two go hand in hand.
