Topic > Essay on Excessive Use of Cell Phones - 883

The amount of time people spend using their cell phones on a daily basis is astronomical. The condition I will talk about is the excessive use of cell phones and how people's behaviors greatly contribute to this condition. People have become so dependent on cell phone use that they tend to feel lost without them. They have lost the ability to face-to-face contact, along with a decrease in the use of language. These are just some of the problems that come with using mobile devices. Other issues that have emerged include the need to stop texting and the law banning the use of cell phones while driving (1, 2). People have become so dependent on mobile devices that they feel like they are losing a limb when they don't have the device in their possession (3). These are some of the more serious problems, while some minor ones include: overuse and lack of patients because the information is just a tap away (4). Excessive use of mobile phones leads to other harmful effects such as loss of studies due to excessive texting, calling and excessive use of Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. With these distractions, students don't give their full attention to studying, which leads to poor grades. Although the use of cell phones has some positive qualities, the negative ones weigh on them. Distracted driving is another big problem that is occurring with the abundance of cell phones. Distracted driving is defined as a type of inattention that occurs while driving and which diverts attention from the road and instead devotes it to another activity (1). The incidence rate is 231,052 crashes caused by drivers using cell phones and texting this year (2). This is becoming more and more prevalent recently. In 2009, the number of accidents involving cell phones…is half the paper…the government has also implemented laws and regulations in some states to make the changes mandatory. Some states have now made it illegal to use your phone while driving unless you are using a hands-free device, while others have simply made it illegal to text while driving. In 2009, 24,000 people were injured due to cell phone distraction while driving (1). The greatest risk of all associated with cell phone use while driving is the death of yourself or someone else. No message is so important that you have to risk your life or education to receive it. Some of these behaviors must be changed by personal choice to improve one's life, while other changes are forced upon us to keep the roads safe for everyone. By making just one of these changes throughout your day, you'll feel like you have a new freedom from attachment to your cell phone.
