Leadership describes a characteristic that often helps others who need guidance. A true leader exemplifies strong initiative and markedly different from others. A leader initiates something new for people to experience instead of old traditions. Being a good leader helps prevent bad things from happening. If a person behaves like a follower, they put themselves at risk of participating in the wrong thing. Followers cause harm to many people in Shirley Jackson's “Lottery”, villagers follow their leaders practicing the same ancient traditions which cause harm or even death. People need leaders instead of followers. Followers potentially harm themselves by following the wrong leadership. Following in the footsteps of others may be the wrong thing to do. Being a leader and guiding others to follow the right path often keeps people out of harm's way. People in the village found that “some other villages have already abandoned lotteries.” (Jackson).
