Similarly, Three Day Road's Xavier and Elijah go through a journey where they lose love and friends eventually turn into enemies. To start, Xavier and Elijah are quickly noticed by the other companions for their hunting skills. Xavier and Elijah grew up with a Native background where Xavier doesn't see murder as a normal thing to do. This is seen when Xavier is first shot. He witnesses how close he was to his death and responds, “The other side wants to kill me and I never even saw their faces” (Boyden, 33). Just like Paul, Xavier shares many similarities in displaying guilt, shame, and innocence. Xavier and Paul, thinking of all his comrades and their service in the war. Showing how his culture taught and raised him to do so. War gives soldiers the main purpose of killing, while for Paul and Xavier killing a human being is not morally wrong. Furthermore, Paul, like Xavier, feels remorse and shame for all the comrades and enemies they have lost. This causes them to enter a state of anger and guilt that they cannot control. This is seen after Xavier is unable to think immediately after destroying a base along with enemies, Xavier proclaims, "I see it over and over in my head so I don't sleep all night, pulling the safety on my mill bomb, throwing it and watching it arch until it disappeared into the crater, the shock and the screams. It is shown that Xavier is emotionally attached to his victims. Although most of the soldiers are alone and cannot express their feelings, this leaves these thoughts as a burden that can lead to madness. However, Xavier finds love during the war which gives him again hope... middle of paper......ks Xavier forces Xavier to kill Elijah, Xavier says, “You have gone mad. There is no going back from where you traveled” (Boyden, 370). happens among men, Elijah admits his mistakes that he made while fighting, Elijah dies in peace. Xavier killed someone he only wanted to protect. The loss of close characters contrasts the personalities between Paul and Xavier, as Xavier lost someone very close to him causing hatred and guilt. Ultimately, Xavier suffers from depression due to the loss of his best friend, with serious injuries due to which he has become addicted to morphine and cannot live without it.
