Substance AbuseVictoria Patino3/24/14HSRV101Substance AbuseSubstance AbuseI have always been drawn to helping people with substance abuse disorders. I feel like my personal experiences with my family and loved ones have also pushed me in the direction of helping even more. By taking human services classes I learned some ways to help others in group therapy and individual therapy. I haven't earned a degree yet, but I've been interested in learning more about how the substance abuse process is addressed in group therapy. From the creation of the group, but also from the different ways in which it is conducted. I would also like to have an idea of what I would do to design my own group in the county where I live. Tulare County has had many issues regarding substance abuse, across all age groups and ethnicities, there are many substance abuse support groups in the area to turn to for help. The best method that I believe, and that I have also learned from my readings, to deal with substance abuse in a group is first with motivational interviewing and then with cognitive behavioral therapy. By first using the motivational interviewing method you can determine the person's goals, see how they are doing with therapy, get their perception of how they see themselves, and see if the person seems to want to continue treatment. After establishing a goal with an individual, it is up to the provider or aide to decide whether the person should be introduced into group therapy. Now is the time when cognitive behavioral therapy would be introduced. Cognitive behavioral groups work on changing learned behavior by changing the person's thought patterns, beliefs and perception.
