THE DIARY OF THE JAGUARS, PANTHERA ONCAThe untold story of the third largest feline on EarthPROLOGUEThe jaguar is the third largest of the four species of big cats in the world. These large cats are members of the Felidae family to which other cats such as leopards, pumas and lions belong. The scientific name of the jaguar is Panthera onca. Once found throughout North America from coast to coast, the jaguar is now occasionally seen in the United States. The cat is found in Mexico and Central and South America and prefers dense rainforests where it can hide from its only predator, humans. Humans have been proven to pose a threat to the species. The jaguar population is threatened because poachers kill them for their fur, habitat loss due to deforestation and to protect livestock - all consequences for jaguars from harm from human activities. In defense, jaguars rarely attack humans, but they are known to stalk people as a way of escorting them out of their territories. On that note, jaguars are silent predators. Jaguars can prey on a wide range of animals, climbing trees where they attack monkeys or on the ground where they crush small animals such as snakes, rats or turtles. Which isn't all that shocking because according to "Jaguars" by Vicky Franchino, "Jaguars are muscular animals with powerful jaws, broad, rounded legs and feet, making them silent hunters and expert climbers, jumpers and swimmers." With an abundance of prey to devour, jaguars have developed enormous skulls and powerful canines and jaws. The jaguar's coloration provides camouflage, especially in rainforest habitats where the jaguars' dense patches blend into the forest environment.
