Amid the recent spate of bomb threats and school shootings, it is clear that something must be done to protect students and teachers. Guns, knives and drugs pose a threat on school campuses. Locker searches could be the answer to making school campuses safer from insider threats. A 1985 Supreme Court case established that schools are allowed to search students' lockers with probable cause (New Jersy v. TLO). One of the biggest problems in schools today is the prevalence of gangs and gang violence. The main gangs are the Gs and the Lords. This is one of the many reasons a student might bring a gun to school. Weapons such as guns, knives, knives and even ice picks are usually brought to school for protection from other gang members. Frequent searches of cabinets can identify and eliminate the threat of guns and knives. If students know that their lockers can be searched, they will be less likely to bring in weapons and other illegal items.
