“Choose a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life.” (Confucius) According to the Whitaker Foundation, biomedical engineering has been around for centuries, perhaps even thousands of years. "In 1816, modesty prevented French physician René Laennec from putting his ear to a young woman's bare chest, so he rolled up a newspaper and listened to it, kickstarting the idea for his invention that led to the ubiquitous stethoscope of Today." (The Whitaker Foundation). “Achievements in biomedical engineering range from early devices, such as crutches, platform shoes, wooden teeth, and the ever-evolving array of tools in a doctor's black bag, to more modern marvels, including pacemakers , the heart-lung machine, dialysis machines, diagnostic equipment, imaging technologies of all kinds, and advanced artificial organs, implants, and prosthetics.” (Whitaker Foundation). Becoming a biomedical engineer is an excellent career choice because it has a positive outlook, the earnings are excellent, and it is an opportunity to contribute to the health of humanity. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook, biomedical engineers held approximately 19,400 jobs in 2012. The state of California currently employs 5,420 biomedical engineers, and Massachusetts employs 1,750 biomedical engineers. My commitment to becoming a biomedical doctor was influenced by the research found because as a California resident I plan to pursue my career in California. My commitment to pursuing this career in California was influenced by the information found because California is the state with the largest biomedical engineer employment in the United States. After analyzing biomedical demographics... halfway through the document... from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations." (Employment Outlook Handbook). After thoroughly studying this career, I am more convinced that this is an excellent career choice for me and I will pursue a career in biomedical engineering.
