Fear and Trembling Kierkegaard examines the old story of Abraham being commanded by what is perceived as god to kill his only son. Abraham had spent many years trying to conceive a child with his wife Sarah and finally successfully had a son named Isaac. In what appears to be the test of the final sacrifice, God, appearing as a burning bush, asks Abraham to take his only son up the mountain and kill him with a knife. The question most people ask is why a god would command Abraham to commit such a heinous act. Furthermore, is Abraham a rational individual, is he crazy, or is this a demonstration of pure unfiltered faith? To answer these questions we first need to cover some basics. Killing Isaac would have been clearly immoral and against any kind of moral code, no matter what. This is indisputable, because the same god who appeared before him also commanded that killing another human being was a sin. Second, Abraham's faith almost led him to kill his son.
