How does symbolism enhance drama in A View From The Bridge?Symbolism is a physical object or reference used to provide meaning to a piece of writing. Symbolism enhances the drama of A View From The Bridge because it increases tension between characters, as well as highlighting key themes. Symbolism is a very important element as it enhances the plot. There are a large amount of symbols that create tension such as: high heels, the chair, the knife, the cigar, the paper doll and homosexuality. When Catherine wears high heels, this represents Catherine's change from a girl to a woman and shows her sexual awareness. She just started wearing high heels around the community and likes the attention she gets from men. They are an easy sign to notice a woman as they make her much taller and appear much older. Eddie disapproves of her wearing them because he grew up with her as his little girl and can't accept the fact that she is growing up and trying new things. It's also “With those new high heels on the sidewalk – clack, clack, clack. Heads turn like windmills. This quote shows how Catherine has caught their attention and will continue to make a good impression in front of men. Catherine purposely rebels against her uncle every time he wears them. Catherine feels that heels give her sexual power over men as they stare at her a lot because she looks pretty. Eddie thinks the heels are changing her in a way he doesn't like, and this makes him angry. Eddie's big problem is that Catherine is more exposed to the real world and will experience more and more opportunities with men, which she wants to do, but Eddie doesn't. Secondly, a key moment in the play is when Marco... ... middle of paper ... has to deal with Eddie, and because Eddie continues to snoop and try to get involved, Marco has to put a stop to it . Another important symbol in the play is the telephone booth. This is an important symbol as it marks a turning point in the play as Eddie has reported Marco and Rodolpho to the immigration office. "A telephone booth begins to glow on the opposite side of the stage." The use of the word "glow" indicates that Eddie is a traitor and that is why the community has lost respect for him. Symbolism plays an important role in creating tension in the show; it is one of the most important factors. Catherine's high heels look mature, Marco challenges Eddie to a chair-lifting contest for power, and Eddie kisses both Catherine and Rodolpho to demonstrate his power; these are all important episodes that heighten the drama of A View From The Bridge.
