Topic > Enzymes: Biological Catalysts - 604

IntroductionEnzymes are known as biological catalysts. (Ahmed) These enzymes bind to substrates. They have specific substrates that they must bind to. The places where enzymes bind are called active sites. The job of a catalyst is to speed up the reaction. All this is only possible through a chemical reaction. The energy supplied to chemical reactions is called activation energy. This is the process that pushes the reaction to happen. Enzymes act as a catalyst that speeds up the reaction without being consumed. Enzymes are a huge part of the body that speed up the chemical process, they are necessary otherwise our body would not be able to do it. Another essential part of an enzyme is its substrate. These are necessary for them to take action. The specific area where the enzyme binds to the substrate is called the activation site. The activation site is where the acceleration of the reaction occurs. The binding reaction is divided into three main sections. These reactions are called forward reaction, reverse reaction and equilibrium. These illustrate...
