Robert FrostRobert Frost is a name familiar to many people for his poetry and less familiar for his inspiring quotes. He once said, “I took the road less traveled, and that made all the difference,” which indeed it did. His life consisted of many twists and turns that, for someone else, could prove to be a brake on one's success. Frost took advantage of bad times and turned them into good ones; changing his vein on America as a great poet. Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, California, to Isabelle Moodie Frost, casually known as Bell, and William Prescott Frost (Costello). During his early childhood, the Frost family lived in a small apartment. His father was a journalist and his mother stayed at home to raise her son (Angyal 556). Frost's father was an alcoholic, a gambler, and a devout politician (Ron Carnell) during Robert's childhood, so his mother protected him from abuse by teaching him inspirational literature and reading Bible scripts (Angyal 557). It was during this difficult period, at an early age, that Robert's poetic niche began. Robert's father died in 1885 of tuberculosis, when Frost was only 11 years old. His remaining family moved east to be with his grandparents (Angyal 557). This was the beginning of his famous New England-themed poem. They were in Lawrence, Massachusetts for much of Frost's late childhood and adolescence (Angyal557). To support his family, Bell began teaching at a local elementary school. Robert helped with expenses with small part-time jobs between schools (Angyal 558). Robert Frost was an excellent student; achievements in sport, debate and editor of the school newspaper. America will look up to Robert Frost as an icon of wonderful literature, as well as surviving the tough times life can throw at him.
