The Journal of My Life in 1756, by: Olaudah Equiano Dear Journal Today was another interesting day. My friends and I went to our traditional tree to search, yet another day, for the kidnappers. To my surprise I found some! It was up to me to alert the neighbor kids so they could catch the man before our parents got home. These foreign men were always trying to come close and take us away, most of the time we managed to group ourselves together to fight them off. Dear diary, one of the most terrible days of my life finally happened. My sister and I were kidnapped by two men and a woman. They climbed over our wall and got us before we could even begin to understand what was happening. They think they are so smart but they have no idea that I followed their walk. I watched the way the sun rose and set to know how to find my way home. My sister is so scared; it's extremely difficult to calm her down when I myself am terrified of the outcome here. I am hiding this diary in hopes that I can provide information on how to escape and return to my hometown. Dear Diary, Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, they did. My sister was taken from me; I have no idea where they took her. Days have passed and I haven't eaten anything except what was forced on me. I can't believe all the things that are happening. It seems like I get sold to others quite frequently. For now I'm with a boss. Everyone has been nice but I'm still going ahead with my plans to leave here and go home. Dear diary, well, my escape plan failed. I managed to escape into the woods but later that evening I realized that there was no way I could make the long journey into the woods alone without food or water. When they finally found me sleeping in the barn the next morning, I thought for sure I was going. being beaten within an inch of my life. I was completely amazed when they beat me lightly and told me to take care of myself so as not to get sick.
