Concert ReportOn November 22, the concert I attended was the APSU Wind Ensemble at the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall. The conductors of this concert were Gregory Wolynec, Christopher Dyel (graduate) and Sarah Turner (graduate). I've been to numerous concerts but never like this. When I first arrived at the concert I expected to hear the first instrument in the woodwind section; the flute, but unfortunately I was shocked because the musicians start with a bass sound; the trumpet. I also expected the artists to be on stage, but they were positioned on opposite sides of the hall and played towards each other. I was very satisfied with the performance which I considered extraordinary and exhilarating. The first movement I would like to talk about is the Canzon duodecimi toni and the Sonata pian'e forte, by Giovanni Gabrieli (1557-1612). In this performance, the texture of this piece was very polyphonic and homophonic with a variety of timbral colors. The dynamics were strong and soft in the Sonata piani'e forte. The form of this piece was in Sonata form; which had four-part bass choirs, each positioned on opposite sides of the hall playing towards each other. I noticed during this performance that the performers did not have a composer directing them. The harmony of this performance was well balanced and effective. I think this was a great opening piece to satisfy the audience's attention. The second movement I would like to talk about is the Serenade in E flat major, op.7 by Richard Strauss (1881). The performance begins with a rich sound from the oboe section over a series of sustained notes played by the horns and contrabassoon. The increase in sound creates a sense of anticipation as the development approaches recovery...... middle of paper......Cristina Spinei was a first-time performer during this concert. I like this piece because it had various melodies and I could hear someone's footsteps echoing in the subway or in the city. It had some great melodies and started very pessiamo and I could hear the different changes back and forth throughout the ensemble. I think the composer's life experiences can influence his music. After reading the program notes I could really understand how the composer's life was influenced by their work. The personal lie of composers can reveal who they are in some of their music and the particular impression they wanted to leave on the audience's face after each performance. Above all the music I heard from this concert reminds me of something I heard in Music Appreciation, there was also a composer I recognize in the program which was Pyotr Ilyich Tichaiksovsky. I remember
