Nowadays, education is widely available and, in all first world countries, in demand. School is treated like a prison where you spend 12 years of your life and then move on with your life. Knowing how to read, write and do math is a basic skill, mastered by everyone. Education has lost its value, its true purpose is hindered by the government and society. In Douglass' day, knowledge was a privilege. Only the wealthiest citizens could afford education. They also made sure to deny the privilege to anyone from a lower bracket.
