“A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with [their] freedom” (Dylan). However, although heroes face complications during their quest, they often succeed in completing an important task in the end. In the book Like Water for Chocolate, the main character, Tita, shows a perfect example of a hero. Tita is on a constant emotional quest throughout the entire story, but she proves along the way that she is truly someone who will not fail. Many characteristics of a hero definitely fit Tita's character, however there are some very important ones, she: undergoes an unusual birth, produces a special weapon, goes through a traumatic event that leads to an adventure, has supernatural help, she experiences atonement with her mother, and when she dies she is rewarded spiritually. Tita emulates the unusual birth circumstances of the standard archetypal hero with her atypical birth immediately at the beginning of the novel. Almost instantly after being introduced to Tita, she “made her entrance into this world, prematurely” (Esquivel 5). A premature birth is certainly abnormal, but it is not the only thing that makes Tita's birth unique. The cause of her premature birth, in fact, was that "her cries became so violent that they caused early labor" (Esquivel 5). His ability to realize his own birth coincides with the idea of an unusual birth. However, it is even more so when the narrator tells the reader that Tita was "literally swept into this world by a great tide of tears" (Esquivel 6). While not the most surprising introduction of a character, it exemplifies Tita's importance and individuality. Among the elements of an archetypal hero, an unusual birth is crucial because it will often deliver to the reader what a... means of paper (vel, 245). Tita was then rewarded spiritually with something she had wanted all her life, she left behind the legacy of a true hero. From the exposition to the epilogue of Like Water For Chocolate, the character Tita represents an archetypal hero. This is known because Tita experiences an unusual birth, wields a special weapon, experiences a traumatic event, receives supernatural help, atones for her mother's wrongdoings, and is spiritually rewarded at the end of her life. Overall, Tita isn't the most charming hero, but she fits the archetype almost perfectly. That said, it's important to remember that the subtleties of a character, in reality, often represent the elements of an archetype. In finding these elements, the reader can find a deeper meaning in most stories, and Like Water for Chocolate is no exception..
