A democracy is a system of government in which the power is held by the people. The electoral college is an indirect election introduced by the Founding Fathers who established the electoral college in the Constitution as an arrangement between the election of the president by a vote of congress. Electoral votes are based on the sum of 100 senators (2 per state) and 438 representatives (distributed by population), which amounts to 538 electors casting votes to decide the president and vice president of the United States. This means that when a citizen goes to the polls, they will elect which candidates will be given to the voters of their state. The magic number that a candidate needs to be elected president is 270. Every state, regardless of the country, all these advantages give American citizens the feeling of using common knowledge, being educated, being well alert and last but not least important, choose the president of the United States. from a direct democracy. The Founding Fathers originally put the Electoral College in the Constitution because there was concern at the time that the general population didn't have enough information to choose the president, but we no longer live in that same era. The electoral college system is unfair and should be abolished because every state is different and some states have more power in voting for the next president. It is also unfair because there have been cases in the past where presidential candidates who did not win a majority of the popular vote were still elected president due to the Electoral College. For example, the 2000 presidential election with Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore were running for president, and Al Gore won the popular vote, but George Bush was elected president. This proved the debate over whether the Electoral College system was fair. way to vote for the future leader of this country. We live in a democratic country, which means one vote is equivalent to a vote to directly choose the president, not the 538 members of the Electoral College. Direct democracy will give the citizens of this nation a choice and a voice. Having one person's vote directly count for a candidate will encourage more citizens to get out and vote and this will positively affect the nation because the number of voters in the United States will increase tremendously compared to the number of voters in the Electoral College system.
