Rhyme, Pattern, and Meaning in a Poisonous Tree In many cases, poems have a very abrupt and awkward sound when read or spoken aloud. A simple solution to ending the awkwardness of a poem is a rhyme scheme. Many poems do not rhyme for reasons related to the topic, but to make the poem more interesting and easier to read the poet uses rhyming words. In many cases, poets use end rhyme, that is, they use words that rhyme at the end of the phrase or clause of each sentence. “A Poison Tree” by William Blake is a great example of an end rhyme used in poetry. When you look at the title "A Poison Tree" you can assume that the poem will be about some sort of fauna. When the reader goes on to read the poem in its entirety, it is seen that “A Poison Tree” is simply a symbolic title. The poem begins with someone recounting his anger at a friend. He had once told a friend why he was angry or upset with him. When he spoke to his friend, the irritation disappeared. In another case, he was even angry with his enemy. Basically he had never told his enemy that he considered him the title of "enemy" and his anguish or hatred for him grew. The poem adopts an "AA, BB" end rhyme scheme meaning that one phrase (in a group of two) will rhyme with the next. The poet continues the poem by exclaiming what he has had to deal with while trying to hide his hatred for his enemy. He had basically tried to hide his hatred or anger towards his enemy out of fear. “And I solarized it with smiles and with soft deceitful wiles” is a line in the poem which shows that the person speaking in the poem also tried to hide his hatred for his enemy. The sentences of the poem continue to rhyme one after the other in sets of two. The third part of the poem exclaims what happened to the hatred and anger that he tried to hide while hiding it from his enemy. His hatred “grew day and night,” which can basically sum up that what the speaker really feels is anguish towards his enemy. Eventually his anguish grew so much that it could no longer be hidden and his enemy discovered his "secret”.”.
