Topic > African Americans: Biases Today - 1193

Although African Americans make up only 30% of the total US population, they account for 60% of prisoners! This is a huge difference! What is the reason for this? The obvious answer is racism. Maybe it's because police officers are racist and more suspicious of African Americans, but maybe it's because African Americans commit more crimes. Even if they do, this criminal attitude is very likely to be reawakened when they are treated unfairly and discriminated against. In any case, racism is the action of creating unfair differences between people of different races. What causes racism in our minds is prejudice. Prejudice is a negative thought that exists in our minds and leads us to treat different people differently. But why does prejudice exist in the world? What is the reason behind our inexplicable tendency to differentiate others? Some say prejudice is part of human nature. Others think we learn it from our elders. Both hypotheses could be true, as there are various controversial beliefs about why prejudice exists in the world. An interesting theory is that prejudice is an emotional reaction that is triggered in our brain every time we meet unknown people, who have different physical characteristics, personalities and/or different beliefs. In fact, these unfamiliar people scare us and we begin to treat them differently to reassure ourselves that they cannot matter to us. Another possible reason for prejudice could be negative education towards others, whether direct or indirect. A direct example might be that you are deliberately taught to avoid certain people who discriminate... middle of paper... ce. Although there was nothing wrong with this movement, it failed to get rid of prejudices. To summarize, it would be difficult to free oneself from the grip of prejudice. Overall, prejudice is a rather controversial topic. Some continue to suggest ideas on how to control it, others believe it is impossible to abolish, but many are not even aware of the problems it poses to modern society. The best and most effective way to get rid of prejudices is to educate people about them. When everyone is convinced that prejudice is a bad thing, there will be no one left to carry it forward. If we do our best, we will definitely be able to destroy prejudice, even if it is a learned trait. Prejudice is like walking; we both learn as we grow. But that doesn't mean we can't get rid of them. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of prejudicial issues around the world.
