Topic > Entering an Unfamiliar Culture - 1138

Several years ago I immersed myself in the gothic and metal lifestyle and am still part of it. As soon as I started hearing more about the underground aspect, I knew I had to investigate. In the gothic and metal lifestyle, no subculture is the same as each genre is like an umbrella, something different always underneath the next. On February 7, 2014, the opportunity arose for me to attend my first sold out Darkside concert in Boston at the Paradise Rock Club at 10pm, which is one of the venues on their world tour. Other places they would tour include: Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Ireland, UK, Australia and China. Interestingly, their next show on February 8, 2014 will be held in New York at Terminal 5, between 34th and 59th streets. This venue has 5 distinct areas and can hold up to 3,000 people. Just a few nights before the concert one of my friends called me and asked if I wanted to go since they had an extra ticket available. I immediately said yes. For the days after acceptance I waited in anticipation; where I come from, concerts and subcultures hardly exist. Even if they exist, they are kept secret. After an hour of driving, my friend and I immediately decided to have dinner. It took us about half an hour to find a place that was within walking distance of the venue. We ate at Brown Sugar Café, a Thai restaurant; it was a pleasure to try something new. However, it took me a long time to decide what I wanted, which made my friend a little anxious with me. In the end, I decided on the lemon chicken. It was cooked to perfection, crispy and tender; the flavor was perfectly balanced, very light on the spices and sea... middle of the paper... familiar, except for my friend, made the adventure a real adventure. It wasn't difficult for me to fit in in terms of an outsider and that didn't hinder my efforts at all. Everyone I spoke to was very welcoming and informative. Embracing the new as fact didn't scare me at all causing my courage to immediately fade after immersing myself. In fact, my presence around others didn't change their behavior at all. as I described before, Darkside and the audience came together as one. After all this, I learned that Darkside concerts are the only place where you can observe a subculture like this. It's extremely hidden and only a certain amount of people know about it, and it will stay that way for now. There are still more questions to answer. But, as of now, diving in as I have helped me understand why Darkside is the “dark side” of the world of subcultures..
