This article argues that Donatello is a true Renaissance artist by evaluating his art, his life and the time he lived in. One reason why Donatello proved himself to be a true Renaissance artist was his life and the way he lived it. Born in Florence in 1386 Donatello was the son of Niccolò di Betto Bardi who was a member of the Florentine guild of wool combers. This gave the young Donatello the status of a craftsman's son and set him on the path to working in the trades. Donatello was educated in the home of the Martelli family, one of the richest Florentine families of the time. It is said that he received his first artistic training in a goldsmith's workshop, and then worked briefly in the studio of the well-known artist Lorenzo Ghiberti.
