A recognized nurse theorist, researcher, writer, and teacher, Martha Elizabeth Rogers was born on May 12, 1914, in Dallas, Texas, as the first child and eldest of four siblings of Mr. and Mrs. Mrs. Rogers. As the eldest of four siblings, Sister Callista Roy was born on October 14, 1939 as the second child but first child of Mr. and Mrs. Fabien Roy. Devout Catholics, her parents named her after St. Callixtus from a Roman Catholic calendar on the day she was born. The daughter of a registered nurse, Callista, was continually taught the importance of knowing everything you could about people, the care they needed, and, above all, giving of yourself selflessly as a nurse. At the age of 14 Callista began working in a large general hospital as a dispensary and quickly rose through the ranks as a nurse. Raised in a highly religious family, Callista reached a crossroads in her life and after a long time a deep spirit of faith, hope, love, commitment to God and service to others were central to this family of seven boys and seven girls. Her mother was a licensed practical nurse and instilled the values ​​of constantly seeking to learn more about people and their care and selfless giving as a nurse. Dr. Roy notes that she also had excellent teachers in the parochial schools, high schools, and college. At the age of 14 she began working in a large general hospital, first as a dispensary, then as a housekeeper and finally as a nurse. After an in-depth discernment process, she decided to join the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, of which she has been a member for more than 40 years. The Roy Knowledge Institute was founded by alumni of Boston College's PhD in Nursing program. Dr. Roy also received the Outstanding Alumna Award and Carondelet Medal from Mount St. Mary's, her alma mater, where she holds a concurrent position as Research Professor of Nursing. In addition to her academic work, community, family and friends, Dr. Roy enjoys music, art, and time for private prayer and reflection, especially in areas where she is surrounded by the beauty of nature.
