Society puts pressure on individuals to achieve cultural goals when they do not have the institutionalized means, this leads to tensions that ultimately lead them to commit crimes. There are four deviant paths to which individuals respond. Innovation is the path in which individuals use illicit methods to achieve these goals. Ritualism is the path in which individuals reject the goals of society, but accept the institutionalized means of society.
