In the article, The Secret to Raising Smart Children, Carol S. Dweck explains that most students are not challenged enough, students are given simple tasks and when they are faced more challenging tasks tend to give up. Teachers find it easier to give students easy problems due to time constraints, but with longer lesson periods this would no longer be an issue (2015). If the school day were extended, teachers could assign more challenging problems and have students work individually after class and then have them share the results aloud, but unfortunately their learning is limited to 45 minutes a day. Assigning challenging problems will potentially help increase the student's thinking and reasoning skills, as well as expand their knowledge. After taking notes students might benefit from a challenging problem, this would allow them to see if they have understood the material well and allow them to ask for help and further explanations if necessary.
