In the article Skin Deep written by Nina Jablonski and George Chaplin, they discuss and delve into the different differences in skin color. Over the years our skin color has developed to become dark enough to block out the harmful sunlight that has damaged our skin and the nutrient folate it carries. At the same time our skin is light enough to receive vitamin D. Anthropologists and geographers have studied and over time have come to the conclusion that the distribution of skin color is not random. It has been found that darker skin color typically comes from near the equator, while lighter skin colors typically come from closer to the north and south poles. Over the years, researchers have found that darker skin colors have protected the skin from skin cancer. Recent studies have shown that “skin color is the product of natural selection acting to regulate the effects of the sun's ultraviolet radiation on key nutrients crucial for reproductive success” (169).
