Topic > The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare - 821

Petruchio openly courts his bride to be Kate; however, Bianca's other three suitors take a different approach. The three suitors, Lucentio, Gremio and Ortensio, all secretly try to woo Bianca, but the strategies and schemes they develop are all very different. Petruchio seems more manly in openly courting Kate; however, the smartest of the three suitors appears to be Lucentio. Petruchio agrees to marry Kate, but only because he wants to have fun and have a rich wife. Petruchio appears virile as he openly courts Kate and asks her to kiss him and celebrate their engagement. Petruchio says sweet words to Kate like: “isn't it okay? Come, my sweet Kate. / Better once than never, for it is never too late” (Vi130–131). Petruchio is brave enough to tell Kate's father Baptista that he and Kate are in love and will get married as soon as possible. Petruchio's way of courting a woman is decidedly more manly than that of the three suitors who court Bianca for her hand. Petruchio also doesn't take no for an answer from Kate; and, when she rejects him; he still acts like she loves him. When Kate hits him and insults Petruchio, he responds only with polite responses and compliments. Petruchio does not give up easily when Kate says: “Alas, good Kate, I will not burden you! For knowing that you are young and light” (II.i.1050). A real man only compliments a shrew. The way Petruchio shows his feelings for Kate and willingly accepts all of her bitchy behavior without complaint is the behavior of a real man. He also shows his anger after marrying Kate by starving her and training her to obey his command. His aggressive actions show off his manly side, but they also show his bestial side. Petruchio's boldness and virile nature win over Kate, and s... middle of paper... the way Hortensio tries to win Bianca's heart by singing to convince her to marry him is exaggerated and clichéd. Hortensio is skilled at wooing her with music, but not as good as Lucentio who woos her with words of love and romance. Gremio really has no chance due to his age and lack of money. Gremio also helps Lucentio without knowing it because he hired Lucentio as Bianca's school teacher giving him the chance to woo Bianca. Lucentio is the most cunning of the three suitors because he manages to deceive Gremio and marry her secretly. Lucentio is the most cunning of the suitors because he runs away with Bianca, capturing her and deprives the other suitors of the possibility of courting her by making her all his. Petruchio is the most virile of the suitors because he openly courts Kate and Lucentio is the most intelligent because his plan works without fail.
