The world population is expected to reach nine billion by 2050 and agricultural demand will double. With a current population already exceeding seven billion people, the problem of hunger is present throughout the world (“New” par. 1). How will we address food shortages in the future? With less land to work, stress on soils and lack of water, it is becoming increasingly difficult for farmers around the world to support our growing population. These complications are making it more difficult for farmers to produce quality, affordable food. To help crops grow better, farmers use chemical fertilizers and sprays to improve growth and control weeds. Agriculture in the United States is a relevant business because it provides food to people, provides jobs to maintain used equipment while new equipment is much more expensive, and provides research on more efficient ways on how to feed the world . it has evolved from providing food for just your family to providing food for your entire community. This began in Europe during the Middle Ages, when a new crop rotation plan emerged. Crop rotation is necessary. If the same crop is grown on the same soil every year, the plants will continue to take in the same nutrients necessary for their survival. Previously farmers used the Roman system, that is, the rotation of two crops. With this system the land was never interrupted, there was always a growing crop (“Fertilization” par. 8). The new crop rotation plan included a three-crop rotation. This system is very different from the Roman system. Every three years the field will remain uncultivated and will be used as pasture. When the field is used for grazing, the animals' excrement is spread all over the field as they graze...... middle of paper.......” Current Science. December 19, 2003: 9. Ebscohost. Network.
