Have you ever felt pain so bad that you wanted to curl up in the fetal position? Now imagine that this pain happens every day and no medication helps relieve the pain. Wow, pretty tough, don't you think? This is what happens when women experience and are diagnosed with endometriosis. Endometriosis is an inherited or genetic female reproductive disease in which tissue that is normally found in the uterus grows outside the uterus (“Endometriosis Fact Sheet”). Researchers have not yet identified the cause of endometriosis, but they have sought to combat this disorder to help reduce the number of women diagnosed with it ("Endometriosis: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia"). Endometriosis, like any other disease or disorder, has several symptoms, only three types of treatments, and a high number of cases diagnosed each year.II. What is endometriosis The cause of endometriosis is unknown, some studies have shown that alterations in the immune response in women with this disorder can affect the body's natural ability to recognize and destroy any improper growth of endometrial tissue ("Endometriosis: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia"). Endometriosis affects women who are in their reproductive years. Scientists have found that this disorder is sometimes hereditary or genetic, and most women diagnosed are between the ages of 25 and 45, which is usually when women enter the menopause stage ("Fact Sheet on endometriosis"). Women may develop endometriosis if they started menstruating at a young age, such as under 12 years of age, have never had children, or have frequent periods that last more than 7 days ("Endometriosis: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia").i. PathologyThe way endometriosis works is the endometrial tissue… middle of paper… There have been many cases where women have been diagnosed at an early age up until their late 40s. Many women live with this pain in silence thinking they are alone or that it is part of their menstrual cycle, but this is wrong. Having extreme pain is not normal. Some have never heard of this disorder like me or Heather. Doctors and researchers have now created several foundations and campaigns to help promote this awareness and alert women that they are not alone and that there is help for endometriosis. "Million Women March for Endometriosis - Endomarch 2014", is an organization that helps women become aware of this disorder and is a march that takes place every March 13th in Washington DC. The organization is spreading to all states and is creating posters, commercials, inviting artists and showing real cases of women to help women around the world.
