The Battle of Britain and Sir Winston ChurchillShortly after the Battle of Britain, Sir Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, is said to have exclaimed: "Never in the field of human conflict so much was owed by so many to so few." The few that Churchill was referring to were the brave aircrews who undertook the arduous task of repelling the massive offensive of the feared German air corps, the Luftwaffe. In 1940 Adolf Hitler ordered an offensive in coordination with an attempted invasion of the island of Great Britain. The only way Hitler could have accomplished this great feat was to assert the power of his Air Force. In November 1940, after months of constant bombing of English coastal cities, the British Royal Air Force was ordered to begin the attack on Germany. This rather inexperienced group of novice pilots successfully managed to repel German attacks and force Hitler into a direct attack on London. It was this major flaw in the German invasion plan that caused Germany's defeat only a few years later. The unknown story is that of the pilots who defeated the German squadrons. Of these pilots approximately sixty percent were born in Canada and over seventy-five percent were trained in Canada. Without the contribution of the Royal Canadian Air Force contingent, the British would not have been able to effectively defend England from the attack of the German Luftwaffe. To fully understand the involvement of the Canadian Forces one must first find out what exactly the Canucks were doing in the war. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) served three roles during World War II. The first of these roles was the British Commonwealth Air Training Scheme; they would be... at the center of the card......t of all the Allied forces. Canada made the largest contribution of any Commonwealth to the Allied Forces during World War II. Without the BCATP and the insurrection of thousands of crew members it would have been extremely difficult for the Allied Powers to stand much of a chance against the might of Germany.Bibliography:Bibliography:Secondary-http://www.cp-tel.net/ miller /BilLee/quotes/Churchill.htmlhttp://www.airforce.dnd.cahttp://www.battleofbritain.nethttp://www.valourandhorror.comwww.rcaf.com/bobhttp://home.istan.ca/ ~ 421squadron/http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/8723/http://history.acusd.edu/gen/WW2Timeline/Prelude13.htmlPrimary-http://avstop.com/History/AroundTheWorld/Poland/ accounts.html"Air battle over London, 1940", EyeWitness: the story through the eyes of those who lived it, www.ibiscom.com (2000).
