There are many formal visual elements that make up a photograph. For example, repetition, framing, balance, leading lines, negative space, and focal point. Lines and focal points are very important aspects of photographs because they influence how we see the image. For example, they can draw us into the image and hold our attention, they can draw us towards the subject thus enhancing the focal point, and take our eyes on a journey through the scene. The formal visual element of lines leading to a focal point is evident in all of the following images: Trinity College Dublin Library, by Candida Höfer, 2004, in chromogenic print, South Corner by Lewis Baltz, Riccar American Company, 3184 Pullman , Costa Mesa, 1974, in gelatin silver print and Untitled Film Still #48, 1979 by Cindy Sherman in gelatin silver print. I group these photographs by the use of leading lines that guide our eyes to the focal point of the photograph.
