Service LearningFor my service learning project I spent an hour selling tickets to the benefit pulled pork dinner with our Cowley Activity Awareness Team (CAAT) , and spent the rest of my hours serving at lunch/dinner. The pulled pork dinner was hosted by ACES, another Cowley club, and all the money raised went towards a food packaging event in November. My duties were to fill cups of water/tea, serve food, and send prepared meals to cars. I chose to do this as a service learning project because I wanted to be face-to-face with the people who were helping us make a difference and gain experience in serving. There were many areas that I saw used in this service learning event that we were taught in psychology. We used classical conditioning which is the type of learning in which a response naturally elicited by one stimulus is elicited by a different, previously neutral stimulus. Whenever a person entered the room where we were serving food, we automatically started preparing our food and were ready to serve it when they lined up. We were conditioned to serve food every time someone new entered the room. This would also be known as a conditioned response. James Frye and Tabitha Farley, the ones who helped us with the event, were our backups. Reinforcers are stimuli that follow a behavior and increase the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated. Every time we did a good job, they complemented us and told us to continue with our good work. This pushed us to work harder and do better. Observational learning was also used in this case. Observational learning is learning by observing other people's behavior. We were shown where to put the designated food, how much to put on the plates and how to be hygienic around the food. Short-term memory briefly stores and processes information from our sensory registers. We used our short-term memory remembering how much food goes where and what to say to people when they are confused about where to go and what to buy. I am majoring in social work and have found many things that connect this and my major together. I learned how to behave in an environment with different types of people with different wants and needs.
