Othello: When Honor Is Gone, What Remains? This is the question we ask ourselves as we read Shakespeare's Othello. Over the course of the play it is revealed that Iago's mission consists of trying to strip Othello of all honor and reduce him to his bestial state. Iago sees Othello as a rhythm from the beginning of the play and is determined to expose him to everyone. In order for the world to see what Iago already sees Othello, Iago intends to persuade Othello to violate his code of honor; the honor that is the only thing that separates beasts from men. Ironically, as Iago tries to convince Othello to stop violating his code of justice, we see that Othello's bestiality was always present. From the beginning of the play, Iago's vision of Othello as a beast is obvious. Iago repeatedly describes Othello in terms of animals. When Iago tries to anger Brabantio when news breaks that his daughter is marrying the Moor, Iago describes his new son-in-law in vulgar and bestial terms. Iago says, "Even now, now, even now, an old black ram... is driving your white sheep." (I.1 lines 89-90) He also states “you will make your daughter cover with a Barbary horse; .you will have your grandchildren next to you; you will have corsiers for cousins and gennets for Germans. (I.1 lines 110-114) Iago actually thinks that Othello is a beast, as he even refers to Othello in animal terms when he is alone. In Iago's soliloquy at the end of Act 1, Iago says that Othello “shall be tenderly guided by the nose; like donkeys." (I.3 lines 395-396)All the others see Othello as a man of justice of whom the Duke speaks as he says: "If virtue lacks no delighted beauty, your son-in-law is much more handsome than black" (I.3 lines 395-396) 330-331) Iago is determined to bring out the beast in Othello, as he sees that it is more right for everyone to know Othello for what he truly is, a beast. “Make the Moor thank me, love me and reward me; for shamefully making him an ass. (II.2 lines 302-303) Just as everyone sees Iago as “honest Iago,” everyone holds Othello in high regard. We see how wrong the characters can be as they don't see the true evil within Iago, we are implored to think that Othello is truly evil too..
