Surveillance camera plays a significant role in crime prevention by warning the criminal that his illegal activity will be filmed by the cameras. Therefore the police will be able to easily arrest them and bring them to justice. It helps provide useful evidence for trials and facilitates judicial proceedings. The main benefit of using surveillance cameras is to protect property from theft and vandalism and ensure public safety. The use of surveillance cameras in public places is very important, the cameras are capable of taking photos from afar and will help investigate illegal activities such as robberies, kidnappings, traffic accidents, murders and drug dealing. Currently in New York City the FBI has found a lot of evidence that terrorists could organize attacks especially in the subway and crowded places. New York City spends millions of dollars on security cameras, to track terrorist activities everywhere in the city. In Lower Manhattan alone there are 3,000 cameras monitoring the entire area. People will feel safer from terrorist attacks such as bombings, shootings and other violent crimes. The offenders may not see the camera, but the camera will record his action. The other criminal or terrorist will learn the lesson that even if there is no police, security can see whatever he does through the camera. Therefore, they may be able to take action before the crime occurs. I strongly agreed that surveillance must be established in public and work places, it cannot eliminate crimes but it will be able to reduce them. In The New York Times newspaper, author Kareem Fahim wrote an article titled "Surveillance Will Expand in Midtown, Mayor Says," in 2009 New York Mayor Michael Bloom Berg reported that Homeland Security had contributed $24 million of dollars to expand the surveillance camera from Lower Manhattan to Midtown Manhattan. New advanced technology cameras have the ability to detect weapons through cameras. Therefore, the bonds will be able to protect significant places located in that particular area such as the Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building and the United Nations. The police department can observe the public through a massive 40-foot video map screen. Furthermore, the passage “Surveillance Cameras and the Times Square Bombing” by William Saletan shows that surveillance cameras cannot eliminate crime, but they can reduce it. On May 1, 2010, a Pakistani/American citizen named Faisal Shahzad detonated a car bomb in Times Square.
