The article I read was “Empathy and Cultural Competence: Reflections from Teachers of Culturally Diverse Children” by Michaela W. Colombo. After reading this article I will talk about what the article is about, my thoughts on the article, and how the article relates to NAEYC's code of ethics. The article talks about how teachers must have cultural compatibility. While it may be difficult for some teachers to grasp and understand the behaviors and beliefs of different cultures. Teachers who can are more likely to provide a learning environment that is enriching and responsive to children's diverse cultures. The teacher should have “meaningful interactions with members of other cultures and promote cultural disequilibrium (Colombo, 2005, p. 2)”. Activities that involve this are more likely to increase cultural competence. The article then goes on to talk about how a suburban Massachusetts town held professional development to get to know Latino students and hosted two family literacy nights with Latino families. During professional development teachers conducted activities that promoted “teachers to think about their own cultural perspectives and to recognize multiple perspectives and cultural linguistic differences (Colombo, 2005, p. 2).” The last part of the article covered four major misconceptions about cultural diversity that were discussed during a university's professional development. English Many teachers have come away from university professional development with a greater understanding and empathy for families from different cultures, understanding of cultural diversity, and multiple perspectives. Overall, the article was great and I learned a lot from it. The part I found... in the middle of the paper... is to include the topic in the NAEYC Code of Ethics and incorporate it into the classroom as it relates to cultural diversity. The article explained cultural competence, why it was important, and how to embrace diversity. The article did a great job informing me about cultural diversity, empathy, and cultural competence with families from different cultures. Additionally, issues relating to the NAEYC Code of Ethics were discussed. ReferencesColombo, M. W. (2005). Empathy and cultural competence: Reflections from teachers of culturally diverse children.
