The Reign of Terror was a period during the French Revolution in which hundreds of thousands of people were executed by various means: guillotine, shooting, and drowning. The Committee of Public Safety, led by Maximilien de Robespierre, was in charge of these executions and had the task of identifying anti-revolutionary forces. Many thought that what Robespierre was doing would only lead to a greater anti-revolutionary movement, which in turn would increase the number of executions. Others have taken no action against terrorism; for fear that they themselves might be executed. Those who were still loyal to the revolution saw the terror as a noble cause; they saw it as a way to rid France of anti-revolutionary forces. Although the terror began as an advantage for the revolution that liberated anti-revolutionary ideals from France, it began to turn into a disadvantage; it was a disadvantage because it showed how radical revolutionaries could be. Most of the population saw terror as a horrible idea gone too far. The terror was concentrated above all in the border cities, which were thinking of seceding from France. The committee considered this an anti-revolutionary action and for this reason began to increase the executions, which led to a greater movement against the revolutionary government (Doc1). Many of these executions occurred against the third class, made up of peasants. This should not have been the case, because the revolutionaries started from the third class against the second and first classes. This further demonstrates how the original purpose of terror, which was to remove anti-revolutionary ideals, was no longer the purpose; his new purpose was to instill fear in people (Doc2). Most of the reasons why people were executed were for anti-revolutionary opinion...... middle of paper ......ic Security, stated that the revolutionary government will protect good citizens while punishing enemies of the government . He justifies the terror by saying that he is only punishing the enemies of the state while protecting the divine citizens from another revolution. As the leader of the committee, he was tasked with making decisions on behalf of the government (Doc4). General Ronsin, leader of the revolutionary army, stated that for anti-revolutionary ideas to truly disappear, the ideas must be exterminated. at the source. He thought the new France needed an example to truly understand how the new government treated those who were against it. Being an army leader he was a true revolutionary and saw terror as a great thing for France; this is because he was not affected by terror because he was so high up the chain of command.
