This is one of the most amazing systems, it can break down food. It extends from the mouth to the anus and is closely associated with the cardiovascular system. You never start to think about how this system works when you go to put your favorite food in your mouth, you never start to think about how it will be digestive. The system I present to you is the digestive system, this system has two groups of organs which are the gastrointestinal tract and the accessory digestive organs. The digestive system is a group of organs that work together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to nourish the entire body. Food passes through a long tube inside the body known as the alimentary canal or gastrointestinal tract (gastrointestinal tract). The alimentary systemThere are six main functions that take place in the digestive system. I start with the beginning of the digestive system, the beginning of the digestive system is the mouth, as soon as you take that first piece of that delicious slice of cold watermelon, the digestive system starts working. When you begin to chew, you use your teeth to break down the food into pieces that you will eventually swallow, which leads to the food being processed in the throat, also called the pharynx. From the throat the food goes to the esophagus also called the food pipe. The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach and is part of the upper gastrointestinal tract. It carries masses of ingested chewed food along its length (Tim). The small intestine consists of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In the small intestine, food that has already been broken down by chewing and stomach enzymes is further broken down by other enzymes. Some of these chemicals are secreted into the lumen (Health Line, Dec. 9, 2014). The small intestine absorbs most of the nutrients we eat, then there is the long intestine. The large intestine (colon) extends from the cecum to the anus and includes the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, the sigmoid colon and the rectum (Healthwise Staff, 2014). food in the stool. Although it is shorter than the small intestine, the large intestine is thicker than the small intestine. The last and final part is the anus, the opening at the end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste exits the body. The anus is where all the food that goes into the mouth comes out of the anus, the anus is connected to the bottom of the rectum. In the digestive system there are accessory organs that assist in digestive processes including the salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The salivary gland is located around the mouth and throat, then there is the liver. The liver is the largest intestine in the body: it stores energy, eliminates poisons and digests food. Then comes the
