After the conclusion of World War II, the United Nations (UN) replaced the ineffective League of Nations and its task was to protect human rights and prevent future wars such as World War 2. The “Big Three” – who were US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union – met in the Soviet city of Yalta to discuss terms of the impending peace treaty, which included talk of a “world organization.” “This organization – which Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin deemed essential “to prevent aggression and eliminate the political, economic and social causes of war through the close and continuous cooperation of all peace-loving peoples” – was to be called the United Nations ( Patterson 7).” The United Nations represents one of the first steps towards the idea of globalization. That the whole world is starting to connect on a social, political and economic level and now with the United Nations this process connects directly with the governments involved in the United Nations to help countries in social, economic and/or political difficulties. The failure of the League of Nations, in its task of maintaining peace, quickly showed nations that a new organization should be created to prevent destructive wars such as World Wars I and II. One of the major flaws of the League of Nations was the refusal of the United States Senate to become a member of the League of Nations, even though the formation of the League had been President Woodrow Wilson's idea. Without US intervention, the League of Nations had no real power, especially with its collective security policy as a tool for maintaining global peace. The problem of collective security was the lack of global powers. “The United States…at the heart of the document…discusses world issues together. Every nation has a say, no matter how big, rich or powerful, every country has a say in situations that may or may not have direct effects. Or whether it's about a leader's questionable actions towards his people or how to stop global poverty and suffering. Every nation is working together to create a better world that nearly 70 years ago was destroyed by years of war and conflict. The United Nations has helped create peaceful relations between warring nations and spread foreign ideas and cultures to newly independent countries. Without the United Nations, World War III would most likely have broken out and devastated the world and foreign nations working together on situations where human rights would never have been realized. Even with today's advanced technology, globalization would not be global without the United Nations.
