Oprah Winfrey is not only the richest woman in the world, but she is also known for being one of the most influential black women to ever live in the United States. He is a person “who has succeeded and spread it to those who need it most” (Oprah 76). She opened many different foundations to help others, for example the Oprah Winfrey foundation. As if that wasn't enough, she created a networking site called Oprah Angel, what she does is help raise money for charitable causes around the world. In 2000, Oprah decided not only to help others with physical and financial problems, but she wanted to take it a step further. She published her own magazine called "O" which would give advice to women on how to deal with the same situations that women face in their daily lives. One of Oprah's greatest works is the Leadership Academy she founded. It's a school in Africa that will prepare students for what awaits them on the other side of those doors. “It is a place where girls will have the opportunity to improve the quality of life for their sisters and generations to come” (Owla 12-13). Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She was born to “young, unmarried parents, Vermon Winfrey and Vernita Lee. His father served in the Army as a soldier at a local base” (Beginning 2-3). Shortly after Oprah was born, her mother found work in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a housekeeper. Vernita was so busy cleaning houses that she had no time to take care of her daughter Oprah. So she asked her mother, Hattie Mae Lee, to take care of her. Hattie took Oprah under her wing and decided to raise her as her own daughter on a Wisconsin farm. Oprah and her grandmother went to church every time…half the paper…Tennessee State University as grand prize…and she WON” (early 1990s). Oprah took the scholarship with joy overflowing from her heart! With no time to waste, she immediately began her journey through college and took speech classes, performing arts classes, and her basics. While still attending college, Oprah was offered a job as a co-anchor on the CBS television station. She thought that having a job and going to college might interfere with her college education, so she confined herself to her speech communications teacher, who told her “that could be the final step in launching her career” (Imbd 33 ). Oprah kept this job until the end of her college career. He wanted to get somewhere other than Nashville. In 1976, Oprah took a risk and moved to Baltimore. She finally found work in 1978 and became co-host of the station's talk show "People Are Talking"..
