Dorothy was a beautiful poem dedicated to Anne Bradstreet's mother in 1650. Anne Bradstreet shared her mother's positive characteristics with her readers. He opened his poem with a warm description of his mother, “A loving mother and an obedient wife” (Belasco p.155). Anne Bradstreet uses the diction to describe her mother in the fifth line, “whom she often fed and clothed from her own provision” (Belasco p.155). Bradstreet wrote of an ideal Puritan woman, a good religious wife and mother. In this period, these are the characteristics that Puritan women should have. He appeals to his reader's emotion by describing his mother. While reading, most people would be able to relate to their own mother.
