When the stock market crashed, millions of people lost their savings, their jobs, and even their homes. Approximately millions of people end up traveling across the country to find jobs that help them support their families. After becoming president, Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted to help the country by stopping the depression and it too would never happen again in the United States. Roosevelt attempted to stop the Depression by introducing a bill called the New Deal to Congress. In the New Deal, there were several types of programs to help Americans find jobs and also receive financial assistance from the government. The Social Security Act was the main element of the Roosevelt New Deal bill. The Social Security Act was created to help the elderly, to give people money when they are unemployed, and to give grants to states to provide health care to people. There was great support for the Social Security Act which was able to pass Congress and the House of Representatives and was subsequently signed into law on August 14, 1935 by President Roosevelt. One of the main reasons this law was popular was the immediate support it would give to people in need and help avoid another economic depression. While some people were against the law because they thought that this act was a socialist program and people would stop working because they received government support. The Social Security Act has been able to help people hope even in the middle of paper......le to stop living in poverty when they get older and to collect a portion of their income when they work so they can have money when they are old. Other people opposed the law because they depended on free government checks and did not want to work to support themselves and their families. To stop this, the government has a fixed amount of money to give to people so that they cannot live in poverty and can try to get a job so that they can support themselves and not with government money. If it were not for the Social Security Act, many people over the age of 65 would be living in poverty. They would have difficulty supporting themselves, so it is important that Social Security continues in the future because one day we may need government help to support ourselves or our families..
