Carlo Gesualdo, also known as the Prince of Venosa, was an Italian composer, lutenist and assassin. He was born on March 30, 1566 in Venosa, Italy. His parents, Fabrizio II Gesulado and Girolama Borromeo, were feudal lords and had enough wealth to own many palaces. Furthermore, he had an older brother named Luigi, who died in 1584, who burdened Gesualdo's shoulders because he was then responsible for the success of his heir family. As for his musical life, Carlo Gesualdo became interested in music as a child. He learned to sing and play the lute and harpsichord. At the age of 20 he married Donna Maria d'Avalos. She was apparently his cousin who had had two children with two ex-husbands before marrying Charles. After getting married, they soon had a son and named him Emmanuel. For some years Carlo concentrated his attention on his wife and put aside his musical hobbies. Unfortunately, his passion for music overpowered his interest in his wife. As a result, his wife had an affair with Don Fabrizio Carafa, also known as the Duke of Andria. Carafa was also married with four children. It is said that both Donna Maria and Don Fabrizio bribed their servants to keep the affair a secret. However, Carlo's uncle, Don Giulio, soon exposed Donna Maria's infidelity to her husband. Donna Maria was advised to suspend the meeting with Don Fabrizio to let things settle down, but she persisted and continued to frequent Don Fabrizio in an indiscreet way. Carlo Gesualdo is believed to have staged the murders of his wife and her lover. According to ancient stories, Carlo pretended to be on a hunting trip only to lure Don Fabrizio to his house while he was away. Carlo then breaks down the bedroom door only to discover that... in the middle of paper... unusual murders and rituals. Near his death, he is said to have made arrangements to be whipped by ten young hired male servants at least 3 times a day. He somehow found comfort through the beatings and preferred them to inflict extreme pain to the point where he could not stand or sit. According to Ross, "he found it relaxing to receive blows on the temple and other parts of the body." Overall, Gesualdo had nothing to be proud of except his musical achievements. Either he was betrayed or he himself ruined his interpersonal relationships. According to Lumis, the sources state that Gesualdo had the pine trees around his house cut down in order to see possible attacks by people especially those who avenged the murders of Donna Maria and Don Fabrizio. At that time Gesualdo could not be arrested by the authorities due to his rank as Prince of Venosa.
