It vividly reminds us that the main purpose of this farewell was to recommend to Americans the great code of conduct that would enable the United States to pursue primarily fruitful relations trade with other countries (Peter A. & Lillback 2006). This was supposed to be consistent with treaty obligations such that the United States had “as few political connections as possible.” Washington categorically warned of permanent alliances and political ties, but did not call for American withdrawal from the world.
