Compared to the Northern strategies, the South had weak ideas because the South's main plan was to maintain a defensive front and for much of the war the Southern strategies consisted simply of preventing to the North to gain territory and the hope of breaking the Union's will to fight. However, the Southern strategy was unsuccessful compared to the Northern war strategy which was the Anaconda Plan. The Anaconda Plan was created to 1. Blockade the South 2. Divide the confederacy by gaining control over the Mississippi River and 3. Capture the Confederate capital, Richmond. However, even though the Anaconda Plan was a success during the war, the North adopted other strategies such as the idea of preventing the European powers, particularly Great Britain and France, from recognizing and providing assistance to the Confederacy. The North's advantage was not only that the strategies were well planned and effective, but the North's advantage was also due to the issues fought during the Civil War, such as the fact that the North was fighting against slavery and the South was fighting for. of slavery that this topic alone caused some difficulties in the army's strategies such as obtaining alliances. Gaining alliances was very difficult for the South to win and maintain because many states did not want to get involved due to the slavery issue.
