When Beijing was planning its Olympic village, it attempted to create plans for the future of the facilities. However, the beach volleyball stadium, built eight years ago, has rotten walls and vandalism, and the rowing canals lie dry and unused (Pygas). This is the case with most Olympic venues in the past. If this continues at the same rate, our world will be invaded by forgotten villages. Currently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not dictate environmental standards for host cities, although in recent years many venues have made efforts to “go green” through the use of environmentally friendly practices. This issue gave rise to a debate on the creation of a permanent venue for the Olympic Games. While this idea would limit the long-term environmental impact of continued construction of new infrastructure, it appears that cities continue to compete for the opportunity to become a future Olympic venue.
