“Karma is the belief that what you do is directly connected to the cause” (). Le Ly sees her ability to suffer through all the hardships in the Vietnam War and her marriage to Steve as a work of karma. In order to be happy and enjoy life, he had to suffer all the bad in order to create the circle of karma. Le Ly, through her many years of suffering, realized that the war was able to help her overcome the circle of karma and understand the war, herself, and Steve. Le Ly believes that war brings out the worst in mankind and that after overcoming the worst moments we can see the good in ourselves. What makes a person strong, what they are capable of experiencing, the compassion we have for each other. Le Ly believes that although war is a terribly destructive process, it brings out the true human spirit. Despite our difficulties, when we are at our worst, the true nature of human beings emerges in our suffering
