Introduction: Frank Lloyd Wright is one of America's most influential architects who left a legacy of structures that intertwine with nature (Mead, 2014, February ). Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, left a legacy of tranquil spaces tucked within parks known for their “picturesque” qualities (Mead, 2014, January). These two men are completely different with the designs they created simply because they use different mediums, but ultimately there aren't many contrasting elements in their designs. The similarities are evident when you start to consider their main priority when designing; mental health and well-being. Considering health and well-being as a mutual focus, it is easy to find that they had complementary design influences, theories and design principles. To create a design that successfully helps calm the mind, they both found that Nature is the best tool to use. This tool now represents their unique contribution to the history of design and, as a result, stands out as something that today's designers want to imitate when focusing on mental health and well-being. Thesis: Although Wright and Olmsted created successful designs using different mediums, they both helped change the way contemporary designers address health and wellness as a focus in their designs. Influences: Past experiences and travel were common ground for Wright and Olmsted when it came to inspiration. Both have personal experiences with nature and a visited land that were used to fuel the projects. Wright has reportedly been influenced by a number of different things throughout his entire career, but the most consistent inspiration has been Nature. Growing up on a farm he was very close to Nature, a...... middle of paper...... Olmsted's principles. With health and wellness as a topic that is still very relevant with the increase in urban development, it is strong evidence that Wright and Olmsted's design principles and theories are useful precedents for contemporary designers. Conclusion: The design principles that Wright and Olmsted lived by helped create a standard for subsequent generations. Using nature as inspiration and employing a consistent programmatic style were characteristics that the designers took from Wright and intend to continue using. Juxtaposing nature and dense urban life, and finding innovative ways to mix them, has become a defining feature that Olmsted points to. Both Frank Lloyd Wright and Frederik Law Olmsted have had a strong influence on today's designers when it comes to including nature in design, but in very contrasting ways.
