Topic > Implementing Strategies - 685

An effective teacher supports instruction to ensure a successful learning experience for all students. Therefore, teachers of language learners need to implement strategies that address the linguistic disadvantages of such learners. “English language learners have special needs that must be met with targeted language-focused strategies so they can understand the content being taught” (Hansen, 2006). The strategies presented in the video promoted language and content acquisition. Teachers use their knowledge of students' language development and language level to create engaging activities that meet language and content needs. To make good choices in how they plan instruction, interact verbally, correct errors, and evaluate English language learners, teachers must understand how language is acquired” (Herrell & Jordan, 2009). One teacher who described numerous attributes required to educate language learners was Mr. Vince Workmon. He taught a fourth grade lesson on fractions. Being Mr. Workmon illustrated how to promote comprehensible input through the use of realia and hands-on learning. In the fractions section, Mr. Wormon used oranges to show students a concrete example of how to add fractions with different denominators. He cut the orange into quarters and discussed with the students how to add the different quarter pieces. He presented half and a quarter of the orange to introduce students to the problem of adding dissimilar fractions. The students were able to determine a way to add the two fractions. For example, one student explained that he could see that half of the orange equaled two quarters, so he knew that half plus one quarter equaled three quarters. The teacher at... middle of paper... increases exposure to conversations involving academic vocabulary. Another idea is to provide a vocabulary that includes the content vocabulary needed to create eloquent discussions. In conclusion, this lesson contained ample examples of the desired characteristics of effective instruction. Language learners were able to thrive in the classroom. Mr. Workmon demonstrated that when teachers provided the necessary tools, language learners engaged in meaningful learning. Works Cited Hansen, L. (2006). Strategies for ELL success.
