Topic > My Love of Reading - 1606

I distinctly remember creating an imaginative story that included fighting a giant beetle in response to a prompt on my fourth grade writing test. My passion for the written word stopped when creative writing gave way to the introduction of academic writing. I attempted to infuse the beauty of words into this new challenge, but was constantly berated by the stark marks of the red pen. My teachers chastised my poor grammar and lack of academic tone. My teachers couldn't see past the thorny mess of comma splices and spelling errors to read the content I was trying to express. Writing became a chore, English was my favorite subject, but the introduction of writing academic papers slowly drowned out everything I loved.
