Topic > The Pros and Cons of Diesel Engines - 915

Much of the dirty, smoky, polluting diesel rhetoric refers to older, high-sulphur diesel vehicles. The website www.fuelecomony.gov states that “diesel vehicles can often go 20% to 35% further on a liter of fuel than their gasoline counterparts” (1). Many naysayers will argue that improved fuel economy comes at a price, but with the development of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel emissions are not an issue. Numerous “gas versus diesel emissions” tests were performed, but most of them contained fairly inconsistent data. The Health and Life Science Journal states that “Using various methods to evaluate the relative contributions of diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles to ambient PM in the United States produces inconsistent results” (Gertler 2355). Some tests may have concluded that diesel was worse emissions-wise, but no consistent long-term test was performed. Over the years, diesel fuel becomes more refined and conforms to petrol while producing more power, acceleration and efficiency. Many arguments against diesel are based on outdated and questionable data. The additional upfront costs for a diesel car are worth it for a more powerful vehicle that will last longer.
